i dont' see a map for an akra slip-on (shorty) + aftermarket air filter..can you suggest an alternative map or do i have to have a custom map?

My best guess would be this one, but you can try a few of the other slip-on's as well.

i'm just fairly new with the pcg stuff so bare with me. how would i know if the map isn't compatible with my mods? will there be any difference felt immediately?

These are maps that Dynojet has tested and tuned, but your bike may run differently (better/worse) with any of these maps. You can always change maps and see how your bike reacts to them. You're looking for a strong & smooth powerband. Keep in mind some maps will cause your bike to run lean/rich, clean as new exhaust tip = lean, jet black, sutty tip = rich, a nice golden brown is what you're targeting.

P.S. I'd rather run rich than lean. You may try some of the Eurospec maps, but your fuel economy will go in the shitter.
